Malda GRP arrests youth for assaulting passengers

The Malda Government Railway Police on Monday arrested the prime accused, Ajmul Hossain, a second year student of Samsi College and a resident of Kariali village under the Harishchandrapur police station for allegedly assaulting two passengers including a woman of a reserved compartment last month during a brawl over seating on others’ reserved seats.

Police is on a search for the other youths accused in the matter. It is to be noted here that Jyotirmoy Haldar accompanied by a woman passenger from English Bazaar who was supposed to appear in an examination in Siliguri had boarded the S-4 compartment of the UP Teesta Torsa Express recently to reach New Jalpaiguri (NJP) station but she later found some youths occupying their reserved seats.

The same situation was faced by some other passengers of that compartment and a brawl started between the two parties over the matter. The youths, for the time being, left the seats but returned there with a gang of boys when the train reached at Bhaluka station.

The passengers were physically assaulted including Mr Haldar and the woman with him. It was alleged that the youths tried to take Mr Haldar off the train but left him only after snatching his valuable mobile set.

Even stones in plenty were thrown targeting the compartment while the train left the Bhaluka station. As the train reached the Kumedpur station the passengers began agitating and they a filed complaint with the GRP.

According to GRP, they had started an investigation immediately after the incident was reported and on Monday they have succeeded in arresting the prime accused in the matter.

The rest of the miscreants are still on the search and the valuable mobile handset belonging to Mr Haldar was recovered from the possession of the youth. The accused was taken to the court on Mondayfrom where he has been sent for a three day police custody.
