Unidentified people allegedly supported by the ruling Trinmaul Congress have hurled crude bombs and stones at four houses of gram panchayat (GP) candidates belonging to the Congress party in two villages, Salabadpur and Balupur under the Chandmoni-II GP under the Ratua police station in Malda in the last two days.

The miscreants also torched some houses, it is learnt, even as they threatened the Congress leaders of dire consequences if they failed to withdraw the nominations they have filed for the rural elections.

The situation there is still tense, though the police claimed they have taken control over the matter and that a few have been detained for interrogation.

“Police picketing has been arranged for to prevent further commotion,” police sources said. The TMC, meanwhile, refuted the allegations and said that the incidents were results of a clash between the Congress and the CPI-M.

“After I filed nomination for the rural elections, local goons of the TMC started threatening me of dire consequences if I did not withdraw the nomination. They also attacked my house with bombs and I managed to flee from there. Now I have taken refuge in another house,” Mumtaj Begum, a candidate of the Ratua-I GP, alleged.

Tajkera Bibi, the wife of Masidur Rahaman, another Congress candidate, echoed Mrs Begum. District president of the Congress, Mausam Noor, today expressed disgust over the matter and alleged inaction from the police.

Moazzem Hossain, the district president of the TMC, however, refuted the allegations and said, “The clash is between the Congress and the CPI-M.” The Sub-divisional police officer (SDPO) of Chanchal, Sajalkanti Biswas, claimed that everything was “under control” now in the two villages in question.
