Delhi Congress on Monday threw hat in the ring amidst political slugfest between ruling AAP government in Delhi and the BJP-led Centre over the proposed fare hike of Metro train fare.
Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee (DPCC) president Ajay Maken announced that the party would start a “Stop Politics, Save Metro” agitation from Wednesday if the City government and the Centre do not end the ‘street fight’ kind of politics on the issue.
Maken alleged the Delhi government held one-day face-saving session of the House on Monday to discuss the Metro fare hike, very well knowing that the metro fares will be increased from October 10, 2017.
In a press conference held at the DPCC office, Maken said “The fare fixation fight between the Delhi government and the Centre is going to put a big question mark on the future of  the Phase IV of Delhi Metro Rail Corporation, as this street fight type of politics between Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and Union Urban Development Minister Hardeep Singh Puri will scare away the JBIC (Japanese Bank for International Cooperation), which provides loan for the construction of the new phases of the Metro.”
Maken said soft Japanese loan constituted 60 per cent of Phase I of DMRC, 54.47 per cent of Phase II and 48.57 per cent of Phase III. In total, Rs 36,525.77 crore have been the contribution of JBIC loan for Delhi Metro as against an equity of Rs 8682 crore of GNCTD. He said that the JBIC may not give loans for the Metro projects which will lead to hampering of several Metro projects.
