Giving a relief to farmers, the Maharashrta government on Saturday announced to waive all loans up to Rs.1.5 lakh.

“Maharashtra government decided loan waiver of Rs. 34,000 crore. We are waiving loans up to Rs.1.5 lakh completely,” state chief minister Devendra Fadnavis said.

“For those farmers who have been paying back their loans regularly, we will give 25 per cent loan return benefit to them,” he said, adding, “Fully aware that the burden will fall on the government, we will cut our expenses. All ministers and MLAs will give one month’s salary to support the loan-waiver.”

The state government had on Monday said it would waive loans up to Rs. 1 lakh for distressed farmers, but some conditions set it were opposed by farmers’ outfits.

The government has clarified that it is not possible to waive the entire farm loan, considering its weak finances and that only those who had taken loan before June 30, 2016, would be eligible.

According to reports, Punjab chief minister Amarinder Singh had on 20 June announced crop-loan waiver up to Rs. 2 lakh for farmers who own less than 5 acres of land and a flat relief of Rs. 2 lakh for all marginal farmers, irrespective of their loan amount.

Before that Yogi Aditayanath government in Uttar Pradesh too had extended a similar relief to farmers.
