The first day of Madhyamik examination left several examinees disappointed as few questions in the Hindi First Language paper was out of syllabus.

On the other hand several candidates were inconvenienced as a handful of schools in the city on Monday did not allow students to even wear analogue wrist-watches inside the exam venue.

The board only puts restrictions on digital and electronic wristwatches and not on analogue watches.

About 11 lakh candidates appeared for their first language paper on Monday out of which about 50 thousand students appeared for Hindi first language paper on Monday.

Emerging from the exam hall several candidates said not just one but two questions were out of syllabus. Each of these questions contained five marks each.

West Bengal Board of Secondary Education( WBBSE) has received a complaint from the school stating these questions were not in the syllabus, prescribed by the board.

In a press conference the board president, Kalyanmoy Ganguly said, “We have received a complaint that two five marks question in the Hindi First Language paper was not from the syllabus.

We will look into the complaint. We will refer the matter to the examination committee and accordingly, a decision will be taken.” Students also complained few government schools did not allow candidates to enter the exam hall with wrist watches.

Parents of the candidates were seen urging the schools to allow them to use analogue watches but schools decided against it.

Father of a candidate whose daughter’s exam centre is Bethune Colligate School enquired, “Our wards are used to giving their exams with analogue wristwatches. Why did this school not allow it when everywhere else analogue watches are being allowed?”

The board president, however, said the restriction is only for digital watches and not for regular analogue wristwatches.

The students cannot wear digital watches to exam halls as several digital watches double up as smart devices, analogue watches can be used, the board president on Monday said.
