Local administration puts ban on poultry products to combat bird flu

The local administration has banned entry of poultry-related products including eggs, chicken meat, feed etc from outside for three months as part of its drive to combat bird flu.

Police personnel have been pressed into service to check the entry of poultry-related products at three important checkpoints and being sent back.

After completion of culling and combing operation, health department and Paradip Municipality have been completed sanitation work in flu-infected Sandhkuda and Badapadia of Paradip Municipality.

Collector Mrs Yamini Sarangi conducted review meeting with all officials including veterinary department, Paradip Municipality, health, revenue, police and forest department officials to restrict the entry of poultry-related product to infected areas, disbursement of compensation, filling up the burial place of hens and ducks by sand, door to door visit by health officials to conduct study about the condition of human being and other activities.

She said the veterinary department has been asked to place the funds with Paradip Municipality for distribution of compensation to people whose hens, duck, eggs etc were destroyed during culling and combing operations.

While no fresh cases of bird death due to avian influenza has been reported, a strict vigil has been kept on other birds in Paradip areas where 1823 birds have been culled, 2109 eggs and 62 kg eggs have also destroyed after culling and combing operation.

It may be recalled that the confirmation of the outbreak of bird flu from two chickens from Badapadia and Sandhkuda when High-Security Animal Diseases Laboratory, Bhopal reported on 23February that tests were H5N1 positive.
