LG alerts CS on illegal immigrants procuring Aadhaar cards

Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena

The Lieutenant Governor’s secretariat has written to the Chief Secretary on Friday, asking him to enforce strict regulations on the issuance of the identity document as Aadhaar cards are being procured by illegal immigrants in large numbers.

According to LG Vinai Kumar Saxena’s office, apart from being a threat to national security, the illegal migrants with these cards could adversely impact local employment. Aadhar cards also enable illegal immigrants to get benefits under the welfare schemes of the government, which is another issue.

The LG secretariat has also called for stricter enforcement of regulations on issuance of Aadhaar cards by the concerned registrars and directed them to switch to an in-house model for the enrolment in this regard within two months.

In effect, the city government has been asked to phase out third-party vendors involved in preparing Aadhaar cards and only let outlets manned by the concerned registrar’s office staff to do the job.

The CS has been asked to provide a comprehensive list of Aadhaar enrolment centres in the entire national capital by July 15.

The LG’s office also mentioned in the communication that Aadhaar enrolment is a very sensitive exercise, it is important to fix responsibility of the person who is gathering data in this regard for fixing accountability.

This development came amid an ongoing drive underway across the national capital to identify and send back illegal Bangladeshis and Rohingyas, who are residing in Delhi.

Earlier, a Delhi minister had said illegal migrants won’t be allowed to settle in Delhi under any circumstances.
