Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Thursday claimed that the Delhi Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal, being “unhappy” with acquittal of its legislators facing “false charges”, has questioned police over its “lacklustre” investigation and has sought a report from the police commissioner in those cases.

Addressing a press conference, Delhi’s AAP chief spokesperson Saurabh Bharadwaj showed a letter dated 9 May purportedly written to the Delhi Police commissioner by the Lieutenant Governor’s office, wherein special secretary RN Sharma wrote that the L-G wanted a report on the “lacklustre” police investigations.

“We were expecting that the L-G would write to the police commissioner and enquire about how the innocent were being framed and put behind bars for no reason and a detailed investigation should be carried out. But to our utter surprise the L-G wrote a letter to the police commissioner asking how and why the MLAs were getting acquitted and how cases against them were being quashed one by one,” Bharadwaj said.

Bharadwaj claimed that the L-G sought a report from the police on “how MLAs be proven to be innocent within one week.

“This is very unfortunate: the L-G, who holds a constitutional post, is worried about how the Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal, Deputy CM Manish Shishodia, Kailash Gehlot, Naresh Balyan and Manoj Kumar MLA from Kondli were acquitted by courts, when he wanted them to be behind bars,” he added.

“The L-G is especially concerned about how Amanatullah Khan got a dignified release from jail,” Bharadwaj alleged.

He further claimed that Sharma had written a letter stating “the Lt Governor has desired that the matter may be looked into and a report along with the court order be sent, within a week, to this Secretariat with respect to the investigation, trial etc, especially with reference to the trial court regarding lacklustre choreographed chargesheet after a prolonged time of more than five years….”
