The newly formed Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government in West Bengal has recorded an additional revenue collection of a whopping Rs 1,000 crore in the first month of its tenure, compared to the corresponding period last year, after toppling the 15-year-old Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress (TMC) from power in the recently-held assembly elections.
The Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) has shared that the state’s revenue collection between May 9 and June 9 exceeded the collection during the same period of the previous financial year by approximately Rs 1,000 crore.
Sources in the CMO has attributed the increase to plugging institutional leakages in revenue collection rather than imposing any new taxes. The CMO has also alleged that widespread corruption under the previous TMC administration had deprived the state exchequer of thousands of crores of rupees.
Suvendu Adhikari was sworn in as the Chief Minister on May 9, 2026.
“In just the first month, West Bengal sees a massive Rs 1000 crore increase in revenue collection. With the elimination of institutional corruption under the previous TMC regime, West Bengal’s state treasury is finally thriving,” BJP West Bengal posted on X.

CMO officials have expressed optimism in the upward trend in revenue mobilisation, saying that this phenomenon is going to continue in the coming months as more leakages are identified and eliminated.
The Suvendu Adhikari government has alleged that the revenue losses under the earlier TMC administration were the result of a deliberate and organised system that enjoyed support at the highest levels of the state administration.
CMO sources further shared that the alleged revenue leakages and the financial losses suffered by the state will be documented in a white paper being prepared by the government, which will identify sectors where revenue was allegedly siphoned off as well as estimate the losses incurred by the state exchequer.
A group of ministers headed by Finance Minister Swapan Dasgupta has already been constituted to prepare the white paper, which held its first meeting at Nabanna on Thursday.
The sectors under scrutiny include sand mining, coal mining and stone quarries, sources in the finance department said.
The allegations come at a time when the political atmosphere in the state remains charged as Rs 440 crore linked to the TMC was frozen.
The BJP government believes that this sharp rise in revenue collection strengthens its claim that systemic corruption had adversely affected the state’s finances under the previous administration.
