Security guards launched an indefinite protest at Kalyani JNM Hospital on Monday after police allegedly detained one of their colleagues from the hospital while he was performing his duty.
The protest began in the morning after a security guard posted at the hospital’s emergency department, was allegedly taken to Kalyani police station while on duty on Sunday night.
The agitating guards alleged that the police acted without justification and vowed to continue their demonstration until he is released.
According to the protesters, the guard Ranjit Singh was on duty at the emergency gate when a woman intern attempted to enter the hospital premises. Following standard security protocol, he asked her to produce her identity card before allowing her entry.
The protesters claimed that after verifying her identity, Singh permitted the intern to enter the hospital. However, shortly afterwards, personnel from Kalyani police station allegedly arrived at the hospital and took him into custody from his workplace.
The agitating security personnel maintained that Singh had merely discharged his official responsibilities and had committed no wrongdoing. They also dismissed allegations that he was under the influence of alcohol, asserting that he was fully fit and carrying out his duties in accordance with hospital rules.
“If a security guard is detained for asking for an identity card, how are we expected to perform our duties?” one of the protesters questioned, accusing the police of acting arbitrarily.
