The West Bengal police have arrested the mastermind of a cyber-fraud syndicate that allegedly used to defraud people under the threat of “digital arrest”. The Cyber Crime wing apprehended the fraudster, identified as Aman Singh, following a raid in Goa.
According to police, Aman, with the help of his accomplices, established illegal call centres in various locations across the country, including Kolkata. They have also allegedly set up illicit telecommunications infrastructure using SIM boxes.
A formal complaint was lodged at the Electronics Complex Police Station in Kolkata’s Bidhannagar, leading to the registration of a case. Detectives from the state police’s Cyber Crime wing subsequently began tracking down the masterminds behind the syndicate.
Police identified Aman after interrogating previously arrested individuals and tracing leads from their mobile phones.
Investigations revealed that Aman was the prime accused in a “digital arrest” threat case filed with the Mumbai Police and was also implicated in a sexual harassment case in Kolkata. Furthermore, Aman was also the mastermind behind numerous cyber-fraud incidents reported across various states.
Acting on this information, detectives found out that he was hiding in Goa and launched a raid there, successfully apprehending him. He is currently being brought to Kolkata.
Police stated that they intend to interrogate Aman to identify other criminals involved in this cyber-crime network spanning the state and the rest of the country.
