While resuce operations at the Taratala warehouse site continue under war footing, one of the victim’s relative who has come to the accident site told The Statesman that there is certainly some “mischief” involved which has led to this incident.

“There is obviously some mischief involved,” she said speaking to The Statesman. In an indirect reference to the previous Trinamool Congress (TMC) regime, she said, “We don’t who what they have done to fill up their pockets. Everything will be out in the investigation.”

Speaking about the condition of the victim, she said, “My cousin is trapped inside. I have not received any update so far, whether he is alive or in what condition he is in.”

Expressing hope, she said, “BJP workers are inside. Let’s see what happens. I am not able to understand anything.”

A relative of another victim from the incident told The Statesman, “We got to know about the incident at 5 pm. We did not go to the spot and came here directly. My relative was involved in cement casting there.”

What happened in Taratala on Wednesday

The five-storey steel-framed structure at Taratala, being built over the past one-and-a-half years on land leased from the Kolkata Port Trust to a leading tea manufacturing company, had been swaying unusually for hours before the incident on Wednesday.

Workers and residents had noticed some flaws in a section of the structure. When several workers gathered beneath the affected portion around noon to inspect the problem, the entire roof and steel framework suddenly gave way, crashing down within minutes and trapping several workers under the debris.

Police said between 40 and 50 labourers were working inside the structure at the time of the collapse. However, the exact number of those still trapped remains uncertain.
