In a thought-provoking statement, RG Kar victim’s mother and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA Ratna Debnath said that it is of utmost importance to find out why ruthless sexual predators raise their ugly heads in society in the first place, apart from working for security for women.

“Security is important. But we should first question why our society breeds such criminals. I think this is something we should all focus upon,” Debnath said in an exclusive conversation with The Statesman.

The BJP MLA from Panihati said that she does not want any woman to be a victim of sexual violence, and go through the same trauma faced by her daughter.

“I don’t want any other woman going through such an ordeal. In the last one month, four incident of rape was reported. We should work to prevent such cases,” Debnath said, pointing out that even after such outrage, sexual violence has not stopped.

Commenting on her long fight for her daughter’s justice, she said, “We are still waiting for justice. It has become two years now. I don’t know how long we need to wait. But I am certain that we will get justice.”

A 31-year-old postgraduate resident doctor at RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata was raped and murdered on 9 August 2024, leading to large scale public protests. The then Mamata Banerjee government’s handling of the case led to sharp critism from social workers and her critics, giving the BJP the ideal political space to launch its attack against the TMC over women’s security.
