Union Home Minister Amit Shah is all set to visit Kolkata on July 19, to hold a crucial meeting with Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MPs, MLAs and senior state leaders, focusing on defining the role of the party organisation and elected representatives after the party’s victory in the Bengal assembly elections.

Party sources have shared that Shah may emphasise on drawing a fine line between the functioning of the government and the party organisation, and underline that the two must operate independently even while pursuing common political objectives.

The interaction migh also be an orientation for legislators and organisational leaders on governance, public outreach and organisational discipline, given the changed political circumstances in Bengal.

This meeting will be the saffron party’s first formal strategy session with its elected representatives after its recent sweep in the assembly elections.

According to party leaders, the first year of the new BJP government will be critical in consolidating public confidence and ensuring effective coordination between the administration and the organisation.

Shah is expected to arrive in the state on 18 July on his two-day visit. He is scheduled to lay the foundation stone for what is being described as the world’s largest curd manufacturing facility at Sankrail in Howrah district as part of his official engagements.

Senior BJP leaders maintain that the party’s priority is to strengthen governance while expanding its organisational base across West Bengal.

Party sources said the discussions are also likely to cover the BJP’s governance agenda, including industrial development, employment generation and measures aimed at restoring investor confidence.

The meeting also comes amid the induction of several prominent former Trinamool Congress leaders into the BJP. Former Rajya Sabha members Sukhendu Sekhar Roy, Sushmita Dev and Prakash Chik Baraik recently joined the BJP and were subsequently announced as the party’s candidates for the Rajya Sabha. This has triggered questions within political circles over the BJP’s stand on admitting leaders from the Trinamool Congress.

State BJP president Samik Bhattacharya has described the inductions as exceptional decisions rather than a change in the party’s overall policy.

Party insiders indicated that Shah may address the issue during the closed-door meeting to dispel doubts among party workers and explain the leadership’s rationale behind the decision.
