The Kalighat Trinamool has knocked the doors of the Calcutta High Court to seek permission for the July 21st Marty’s Day event in front of Victoria House in Kolkta.
According to sources, the Calcutta High Court have hear the case in the coming week. The case has been filed before Justice Saugata Bhattacharyya.
The Marty’s Day rally is the Trinamool’s most significant political event held annually since 1993 for more than three decades, with Dharmatala, in central Kolkata, serving as its traditional venue in most years.
The programme is held to commemorate the events of July 21, 1993, when police firing during a Youth Congress march towards Writers’ Building in Kolkata led to the deaths of 13 people.
This year, after the party’s recent drubbing in assembly elections, the Kolkata Police had said that no political programme blocking roads would be allowed at Dharmatala.
After the party’s split following the polls, both the ‘rebel’ group led by Bengal Leader of Opposition Ritabrata Banerjee and the Kalighat faction, who are Mamata Banerjee loyalists, wanted to organise seperate programmes in front of Victoria House on July 21 to observe the special day.
Kalighat TMC leaders Kunal Ghosh and Dola Sen had also carried out measurements at the proposed venue which prompted the Kolkata Police to register a case against them.
Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari had taking a swipe at the leaders in assembly saying that they had gone to the site with measuring tapes before receiving permission and even suggested that they should consider holding the meeting at Brigade Parade Ground if they were expecting a large turnout.
