In alleviate the pain of commuters of Kolkata’s Behala area from the persistent waterlogging especially during the monsoon months, Bengal Minister of State (MoS) Indranil Khan shot off a letter to state Irrigation Minister Arup Kumar Das urging him to immediately restore and revamp the Churial, Sonamukhi and Shuti canals in the area to prevent this problem.
The Behala Paschim MLA pointed out in his letter that there is huge deposition of mud and solid waste in those canals due to which water outsourcing from the drains is not being effectively carried out, leading to backflow from these canals leading to waterloggin in his constituency.
“There is a huge deposition of mud and solid waste due to which the water outsourcing from the drains is not happening properly. Instead backflow from these canals are happening which is causing waterlogging for several weeks in Behala Paschim and also causing major health and hygiene issues,” Khan who is the Mos (Independent Charge) of Department of Youth Services and Sports) wrote.
Urging the Minister to carry out desiliting of the canals at the earliest, he added, “At the same time the original width of the canals need to be checked once and the canals need to be restored with their original width.”
Behala and its surrounding areas are prone to waterlogging every monsoon, making lives difficult for residents in the area, as well as coummuters.
