Signalling IIT Kharagpur’s growing role in shaping India’s emerging AI ecosystem, the premier institute in Paschim Medinipur district of West Bengal, on Wednesday announced that it has entered into a tripartite partnership with the Government of Tripura and Senrysa Technologies Ltd. to establish a first-of-its-kind Centre of Excellence and Innovation Hub in the northeastern state.
The announcement on its official X handle came after the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed during the Destination Tripura Business Conclave 2026, underscoring Tripura’s ambition to position itself as a new technology and innovation destination.
The MoU was signed by Suman Chakraborty, Director of IIT Kharagpur; Kumar P. Saha, Managing Director and CEO of Senrysa Technologies Ltd.; and Jeya Ragul Geshan B., Director of the Department of Information Technology, Government of Tripura.
The agreement was exchanged in the presence of Chief Economic Adviser to the Government of India V. Anantha Nageswaran, Tripura Chief Secretary Jitendra Kumar Sinha, and Kiran Gitte, Secretary of the state’s Industries & Commerce and Information Technology departments.
According to IIT Kharagpur, the Centre of Excellence will serve as a collaborative platform for advancing artificial intelligence, deep-tech research, startup incubation, skill development and industry-academia partnerships.
The initiative is expected to leverage the institute’s research expertise to nurture local talent, promote innovation-driven entrepreneurship and strengthen Tripura’s digital economy.
The project has been launched with the support of Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha, whose government has been aggressively pursuing investments in emerging technologies as part of its broader economic development strategy.
The IIT Kharagpur partnership was among the key technology agreements signed during the conclave, where the state’s Information Technology Department alone secured 43 Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) and 11 Expressions of Interest (EoIs) with a proposed investment exceeding Rs 10,000 crore.
Several national technology firms also announced collaborations with the state. Google India signed an MoU to support the development of an artificial intelligence ecosystem through technology transfer, cloud infrastructure and responsible AI adoption, while Salesforce partnered with the government to deploy AI-enabled citizen services and digital governance solutions. Discussions were also initiated with Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) for future digital infrastructure projects.
The state also unveiled plans for a dedicated IT and Data Ecosystem Zone in Agartala, a proposed 10-acre IT Park with an AI Centre of Excellence, expansion of drone and robotics technologies, and large-scale AI-focused skill development programmes aimed at preparing Tripura’s workforce for the digital economy.
With IIT Kharagpur lending its academic and research credentials to the initiative, Tripura’s technology roadmap has received a significant institutional boost, reflecting a broader trend of premier educational institutions partnering with states to build regional innovation ecosystems, a senior state government official said.
