After her vehicle was allegedly attacked with eggs in Cooch Behar, CPI(M) leader Minakshi Mukherjee on Wednesday approached the Calcutta High Court seeking judicial intervention.

The incident occurred when she was on her way to meet the family of a deceased party worker in the district’s Sitalkuchi area. Mukherjee had streamed the episode live on Facebook and later submitted a written complaint to the Cooch Behar Superintendent of Police.

The matter was mentioned before the bench of Justice Sougata Bhattacharyya by Mukherjee’s counsel, Abhishek Haldar. He informed the court that Mukherjee’s vehicle had come under attack while she was travelling to meet the family of CPI(M) worker Montu Miyan in Sitalkuchi, necessitating judicial intervention.

Justice Bhattacharyya allowed the petitioner to file the case and said the matter would be taken up for hearing once all procedural formalities were completed.

Montu Miyan had died a few days ago under circumstances that his family suspects were homicidal. The family has alleged that the police initially refused to register their complaint.

Mukherjee had visited Sitalkuchi to express solidarity with the bereaved family. She had also raised the issue of a migrant worker from Sitalkuchi who died while working in Mumbai.

The CPI(M) claimed that the police failed to assist the family in bringing the body back home.

Protesting both incidents, the Left Front had organised a demonstration outside the Cooch Behar District Magistrate’s office on Tuesday.

The incident comes a day after Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra sought an urgent hearing in the Calcutta High Court over a similar egg-throwing incident involving her vehicle.

The court declined her plea, observing that several such petitions were pending and would be heard following the prescribed legal procedure.
