The West Bengal Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) headquarters in Kolkata witnessed stormy scenes on Friday over the proposed induction of former Trinamool Congress (TMC) councillor and borough chairperson Rehana Khatun.
The situation turned chaotic as agitating workers allegedly hurled eggs inside the party office and engaged in heated arguments with supporters of Khatun, leading to jostling and near scuffles before senior leaders intervened to restore order.
Party sources claimed that Khatun, the former councillor of Ward No. 44 under the Kolkata Municipal Corporation, arrived at the PCC headquarters on Friday to formally join the Congress.
However, news of her proposed induction prompted immediate opposition from a section of Congress workers, who raised slogans and staged a demonstration against her entry into the party.
Amid the protest, eggs were allegedly thrown in Khatun’s direction, triggering further commotion within the party office. The confrontation soon escalated into verbal altercations between rival groups of party workers, with the situation threatening to spiral out of control for a brief period.
Senior Congress leaders and office-bearers stepped in to defuse tensions and prevent the confrontation from turning violent. Order was restored after sustained efforts, though the atmosphere at the party headquarters remained tense for some time.
The protesting workers alleged that Khatun was attempting to join the Congress to shield herself from possible legal action in connection with pending cases. They argued that inducting leaders facing such allegations would damage the party’s credibility and image.
The protesters maintained that the Congress should be cautious while admitting leaders from other political parties.
Responding to the controversy, West Bengal Pradesh Congress Committee president Subhankar Sarkar said the Congress remains open to leaders and workers from other political parties who are opposed to the BJP. However, he clarified that the party was yet to take a final decision regarding Khatun’s induction.

“The Congress has opened its doors for leaders and workers from other parties who are against the BJP. However, the party will decide on Rehana Khatun’s induction after due consideration,” Sarkar said.
