Kolkatans will be able to enjoy a fresh scenic view of the riverfront at Kumartuli Ghat in north Kolkata ahead og this Durga Puja as the authorities of Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port are eying for its complete revamp before the festival.
The redevelopment of the city’s iconic ghat was started in 2025 after a Memorandum of Understanding was signed between the Kolkata port and Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Ltd (APSEZ) on July 11 that year. The plan was to carry out restoration work under a Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative at the historic riverfront.
Sources from the city port said that repair work of the heritage structures at the ghat including temples, and shrines have been completed. Traditional techniques were used to preserve the precinct’s sacred ambience.
In addition to this, the river banks have been strengthened, the platforms used for performing the rituals have been upgraded while the pedestrian walkways have been revamped.
Moreover, dedicated zones for artisans, cultural events, recreation, boating, deck views, food courts, souvenir stalls, and community toilets have also been set up.
The revamped ghat is said to have green embankments, native riverine plantations and groves inspired by Uttar Pradesh’s Vrindavan. Work is also underway on the architectural illumination of the ghats
The ghats and facades at Kumartuli have also been illuminated, along with first aid and surveillance systems.
“Kumartuli is Kolkata’s cultural soul,” Rathendra Raman, the chairman of the city port said, adding, “Through this partnership with APSEZ Ltd., we are not just restoring infrastructure but reviving a space woven into West Bengal’s identity. The project will make the ghat safer, cleaner, and more welcoming for all.”
The redevelopment project budgeted at Rs 10 crore, will be executed in phases to ensure minimal disruption, especially during Durga Puja.
