After being denied permission to hold a rally on Wednesday, the Kalighat faction of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) has now knocked the doors of the Calcutta High Court.

Former chief minister and TMC chief Mamata Banerjee is also likely to participate in the rally, though the purpose behind the programme is not immediately clear.

The matter was mentioned before the bench of Justice Sougata Bhattacharya by senior TMC leader and lawyer Kalyan Banerjee.

The legal move comes at a time when the Kalighat faction of the TMC is seeking to regain political foothold in the state after its recent debacle in the assembly elections.

While Mamata Banerjee had earlier led a protest march against the eviction of hawkers in Kolkata, the demonstration witnessed a limited turnout, with only a handful of party leaders and workers accompanying her during the march.

Wednesday’s rally may be another attempt by the Kalighat faction to mobilise supporters.
