Amid Durga Puja celebrations, Kolkata witnessed a disruption on Tuesday as unprecedented overnight rains inundated several parts of the city.
At least seven people were electrocuted in the city, officials said. The deaths were reported from five areas in the city — Netaji Nagar, Kalikapur, Mominpur and Ballygunge Place in south Kolkata and Beniapukur in north Kolkata.
The downpour, which started on Monday night and continued for around seven hours, led to waterlogging in several areas, resulting in suspension of metro services and crippling traffic movement across the city. Over 300 mm of rainfall was recorded across the city.

Metro services were suspended between Shahid Khudiram and Maidan stations to ensure passenger safety amid waterlogging between the Mahanayak Uttam Kumar and Rabindra Sarobar station mid-section.
In a statement, Kolkata Metro said that truncated services were being run between Dakshineswar and Maidan stations.
“Water is being pumped out. Officers and staff of Metro Railway have reached the spot to address the issue at the earliest,” Kolkata Metro said in the statement.
Visuals shared by a news agency showed railway tracks and shops were submerged in knee-deep water, while officials worked on a war-footing to pump it out to restore normalcy.

Meanwhile, electricity and internet services have also been disrupted in Kolkata and its suburbs. Several Durga Puja pandals have also sustained damage due to incessant rains.
The India Meteorological Department had predicted heavy rains for Kolkata on Monday due to a low pressure that was moving towards the city.
The weather office has also predicted heavy rainfall in Kolkata and surrounding areas on September 25.
