Kin of deceased patient rough up 3 CNMC docs, allege negligence

An incident of fire and another case of alleged negligence in treatment causing death of a patient rocked the state-run Calcutta National Medical College Hospital (CNMCH) on Thursday disrupting the normal healthcare services. The first incident occurred when a 40-year-old patient, Sk Arshad Hussain, a resident of Tiljala area, died at the hospital around 1.30 p.m. due to alleged negligence in his treatment.

Relatives of the deceased turned violent and they assaulted three doctors including two juniors in protest against the death. Three doctors ~ Asique Ayub, Sourav Majumder and Syed Rafi Ahmed ~ who sustained injuries were admitted to the hospital.

Junior doctors who are the main workforce in any teaching hospital staged demonstration inside the hospital complex in protest against the incident of assault on three of their colleagues. The agitating relatives alleged that the patient died because he was not treated properly by doctors soon after he was rushed to the emergency ward showing symptoms of severe gasping.

One doctor attended to him in the emergency ward and advised for his admission. He died while he was being shifted to the ward for admission from the emergency. A group of 15 angry relatives including some women members entered into the emergency and roughed up three doctors who were on duty.Tension prevailed in the emergency ward when some doctors chased the attackers and caught two of them.

In another incident, a small fire broke out in the second floor of the Rammohan Block in the same hospital later in the day causing panic among indoor patients undergoing treatment in the building. Two fire fighting engines were pressed into service to bring the fire under control within half an hour.

Eyewitness said that flames engulfing the bathroom in the second floor of the Rammohan building that houses cardiology and general medicine departments was seen coming out around 5 p.m. Fire brigade men rushed to the spot within half an hour and they evacuated the patients from different floors of the building. No casualty was reported so far.
