Having achieved considerable success in cleanliness, Karnal is aiming to become a leading district in the Cleanliness Survey- 2019 in the country.

Under Swachh Bharat Mission, Haryana tops the states which have been declared open defecation-free. Karnal intends to follow in the footsteps of the cleanest city Indore in Madhya Pradesh.

A delegation headed by Executive Vice-Chairman, Haryana Swachh Bharat Mission, Subhash Chandra, recently visited Indore for three days. The delegation learnt about the steps taken by Indore city to become the cleanest city which included generating awareness among the people, and taking tough steps.

He said Indore city had initiated several awareness campaigns, including advertisements, songs on cleanliness, slogans, skits, construction of private and public toilets in large numbers, proper garbage management system, and resolving complaints received through Swachhta Application in a time-bound manner.

The steps taken by Indore city to achieve the top slot included ward heads being provided with vehicles to keep a watch on cleanliness in their respective wards and fine being imposed for violation of rules.

In order to make Karnal or any state of the country clean like Indore, there should be a provision of fine for not keeping the areas clean.

Under Swachhta Mission, there should be maximum participation of voluntary organisations and general public, the topic of cleanliness should be taught in schools, awareness campaigns run in both urban and rural areas, modern machines should be made available for cleanliness, and proper management of solid and liquid waste should be ensured in Haryana, the spokesman added.
