Much to the delight of tourists, the ropeway connecting Jakhoo hill, the highest point in Shimla at 8,000 feet, was on Monday inaugurated by Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh.

The 450 metres long cable would take the tourists to Jakhoo hill housing famous Hanuman temple of Shimla in six minutes.

The ropeway has a base near US club gate near The Mall. From here, the tourists otherwise have to walk up the hill, which takes an hour or so and is extremely tiring for them. The monkeys on way make it more scary for them to walk.

Constructed by Jagson International Ltd, the Rs.40 crore project took ten years to complete after the laying of foundation stone in 2007 and hit several environmental and legal hurdles in between. It was ready last year for the trial run, which had, however, failed with the cabins having fallen down.

Constructed on Public Private Partnership (PPP) mode, the Company would give Rs.57 lakh as dividend through Tourism Department to the government in its first year and thereafter 15 per cent of the collection money every year.

“It is my dream project and just one of its kind in the state. This would further give boost to tourism industry,” he said.

Vice Chairman HPTDC, Harish Janartha, Mayor Municipal Corporation, Shimla, Sanjay Chauhan, Commissioner Tourism, Dinesh Malhotra and CMD Jagson International Ltd and J P Gupta were also present on the occasion among others.
