Jai Ram Thakur calls statutory status to NCBC historic

Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur.

Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur on Tuesday termed the passing of the Bill to provide constitutional status to the National Commission for Backward Classes (NCBC) in the Parliament, as a historic step.

The move would ensure empowerment of the OBC communities in the country, he added.

While hailing the bill, the CM said that the bill seeks to bring the National Commission for Backward Classes at par with the National Commission for Scheduled Castes and the National Commission for Scheduled Tribes.

“The bill have fulfilled the long demand of OBCs,” he said, adding it shows that the Union government under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi was committed for the welfare and development of weaker and vulnerable sections of the society.

Thakur said the National Commission for Backward Classes, a statutory body created in 1993, was given limited powers only to recommend to the government inclusion or exclusion of a community in the central list of OBCs.
