Terrorists attacked a police station in South Kashmir’s Shopian in the wee hours of Sunday and fled with the automatic assault rifle of a policeman on sentry duty after killing him.

According to a police official, the terrorists fired indiscriminately at the Shopian Police Station early today. The attack was repulsed by alert police personnel posted at the station.

Constable Saqib Mir sustained serious injuries in the gunfight. He was evacuated to a nearby hospital for treatment where he succumbed to his injuries.

The wreath-laying ceremony of the martyred cop was held in the district police lines where senior officers of police and CRPF were present.

Police officers led by DIG South Kashmir Range paid rich tributes to the martyr who made supreme sacrifice in the line of duty.

Security forces have cordoned the area and launched a manhunt for the terrorists.

The incident has again exposed the laxity of the police in the nerve centre of terrorism where militants have been targeting security forces and their families at will.
