Dynastic politics, it appears, is not the preserve of the Congress alone, judging by the manner in which senior politicians in Karnataka have managed to get tickets for their children and relatives when it comes to the 12 May assembly elections.

Whether it is Deve Gowda or chief minister Siddaramaiah or, for that matter, former chief minister, B S Yeddyurappa, all of them have managed tickets for their children. In the process, they have left a lot of disgruntled aspirants in their parties.

The Deve Gowda family, for one, takes the lead in that the former Prime Minister’s two sons, H D Kumaraswamy and Revanna, head the list of JDS candidates.

While Kumaraswamy, former chief minister, is contesting from Ramnagara and Channapatna, his brother, Revanna will fight the elections from Holenarsipura in Hassan district.

The possibility of their wives also jumping into the fray was also talked about though Bhavani, Revanna’s wife, who is a zila parishad member, may have to be content with that post for now, instead of getting a ticket to contest the elections. Her sister-in-law, Anita Kumaraswamy, though may get a ticket, something that has caused a bit of a friction in the family.

In the BJP, we are seeing B S Yeddyurappa’s son, Vijendra throwing his hat into the ring. He is all set to contest from Varuna and hopes to give a tough fight to Yatindra, chief minister Siddaramiah’s son.

The chief minister won from here in 2013 but has opted to vacate the constituency for his son this time while moving to neighbouring Chamundeshwari.

It is another matter that Siddaramiah is also making a desperate bid to contest from Badami in Bagalkot district too considering the stiff opposition he is set to face from the dominant Vokkaligga community, known supporters of the Deve Gowda family, in Chamundeshwari.

In fact, initial reports from the state intelligence, it is learnt, suggest that the chief minister may suffer a loss from this constituency. Therefore, his attempt to seek another constituency in Badami as well.

The BJP and JDS, however, believe that even the talk of fighting from a second seat is enough indication that the chief minister has scored a self-goal in Chamundeshwari itself, as the constituency’s voters will not be happy.

Significantly, BJP chief ministerial candidate Yeddyurappa, who is contesting from Shikaripura from where he has been elected repeatedly, is not averse to fighting from Badami too. That is, only if Siddaramiah fights from Badami as well.

Meanwhile, former chief minister, Bangarappa’s sons, Madhu and Kumar Bangarappa are also trying their luck with the former representing the JDS and the latter BJP. In the 2013 elections, their sister, Gita Shivrajkumar, made an abortive attempt to enter the Lok Sabha from Shimoga constituency on a JDS ticket.

In another development, Soumya, daughter of home minister Ramalinga Reddy, will be fighting from Jayanagar while Santhosh Jayachandra, son of law minister, T B Jayachandra, has got the ticket to contest from Chikkanyakahalli in Tumkur district.
