IIT-Kanpur student allegedly commits suicide

A third year Ph.D student of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Kanpur, allegedly committed suicide on Wednesday by hanging himself from the ceiling in his hostel room.

Police identified the victim as Bheem Singh, said Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Akhilesh Kumar. The boy was last seen on Tuesday. The post-mortem of the body will be conducted today.

It is believed that the boy hanged himself in the afternoon, while the body was recovered late Wednesday evening.

Singh, who hailed from Ferozabad, was staying at a hostel on IIT campus, the SSP said.

Singh’s friends told police that he was under severe stress, said the SSP adding that “the reason behind extreme step is yet to be ascertained as the victim had left no suicide note behind.”

The reason behind the student’s suicide is yet to be ascertained. Police, reportedly, recovered a note from Singh’s room, which was torn into pieces.

Other students of the hostel noticed that Singh’s room was locked for a long time and didn’t get any response when they knocked. After being informed by the students, authorities broke the doors and found Singh’s body handing from the fan following which the police was informed.
