Delhi Congress president Devender Yadav has expressed concern over the data released by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) under the National Cancer Registry Programme, stating that the rising number of cancer cases in Delhi is alarming and increasing every year.
Yadav, on the basis of the report, said that during the year 2024, the cancer cases reported were 28387, and in the year 2023, the figure was 27561, while back in the year 2022, there were 26735 cancer patients in the city.
He said that cancer is such a dreaded word that anyone who hears it gets scared, and further accused the previous Aam Aadmi Party government and the present regime of being unable to provide modern facilities for the treatment of the disease in the hospitals, as per the rise in cases.
Yadav said that the data of cancer in the country is alarming, with more than 15.33 lakh cases reported in 2024, while the national capital alone reported 28,387 cases, which is the highest proportion of cases across the country in terms of population density.
Yadav said while the BJP government needs to take permanent measures to control pollution, the current CM should launch a cancer awareness campaign across Delhi.
He emphasized that it is the responsibility of the government to arrange medical facilities, screening, and free medicines for cancer patients, as the poor cannot afford to get themselves treated in private hospitals, while the condition of Delhi government hospitals has deteriorated, he alleged.
