Huge amount of drugs seized in Malda raid

Seized drugs

Acting on a tip-off, the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) seized a huge quantity of drugs and arrested two persons from English Bazaar and Kaliachak in Malda last night. Almost 4.5 kilograms of ganja, 1947 injections and 885 tablets were seized by the zonal unit of the NCB.

The arrested have been identified as Krishna Chand Das of English Bazaar and Rafikul Islam Choudhury of Beliadanga under the Kaliachak police station. Both of them were produced in the court today. The incident points to an international route through which such drugs are being brought into the country, officials in the know have said.

According to a press release issued by the NCB, a shop at Jhaljhalia under the English Bazaar police station was raided by the team after getting specific information about it. After interrogations, they recovered 4.5 kg of ganja, 303 Ya-ba (Methamphetamines) tablets weighing 30.3 grams from the possession of Das, who claimed the ganja supply came from Assam and tablets from a personin Kaliachak who also
deals in narcotic injections. Following the information, the NCB team also raided the residence of Choudhury in Kaliachak where 1947 Buprenorphine injections and 552 Ya-ba tablets were seized.

Officials also said that the source of the ganja was Manipur, while the Ya-ba was smuggled from Myanmar and injections from Mouzampur under the Kaliachak police station, among which, the latter two were destined for Kolkata for local consumption. According to the press release, the total worth of the seized drugs is around Rs 10 lakh. Notably, these tablets and injections are used as strong narcotic drugs which can  have an effect of three to 24 hours on the consumer. The seizure of such drugs also hinted at a route through which these were smuggled into the country from Myanmar.

A few days ago, a huge quantity of ganja was recovered from a warehouse at Gayeshpur under the English Bazaar police station, while last night’s seizure was also near that same place.
