Terming the recent attacks on properties belonging to lawyers “startling and worrying”, the Delhi High Court on Monday asked for an action-taken report from the Delhi Police in this regard. It said the report sought should be filed under the signature of a senior police officer and be shown to the Delhi Police Commissioner.

Observing that the incidents warranted swift and necessary action, a bench of Acting Chief Justice Gita Mittal and Justice C Hari Shankar also directed that the report be filed in two days. Expressing anguish over the delay in probing the incidents, the bench said, “It is a matter of deep pain as the incidents could have caused loss to the life and property of the lawyers.”

It further observed, “The incidents were startling and worrying as these happened to lawyers who defend the litigants.”

Initiating the proceedings on its own, the court issued the direction after taking note of the lawyers’ decision to abstain from work on January 25 following the attacks on the properties of two of them.

Praying for guidelines for lawyers’ security, a plea has also been moved before the High Court seeking a court-monitored probe by a special investigation team (SIT) in this regard.

A resolution was passed on January 24 by the executive committee of the Delhi High Court Bar Association (DHCBA) condemning the January 9 and 22 attacks on the properties, including cars, belonging to senior advocates Vikas Pahwa and Kirti Uppal, president of the DHCBA. Inflammable substances were used in the attacks.

A similar incident was reported on January 4, when two cars – a Maruti Swift and a Honda Amaze – parked in the East Delhi house of advocate Ravi Sharma were allegedly set ablaze by unidentified persons.
