Crime against women in Haryana continued an upward trend in Haryana with as many as 1,413 cases of rape being registered in over 12 months.
In a reply given by Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar during the monsoon session of the Haryana Assembly, it was stated that incidents of crime against women had gone up with dowry deaths being an exception.
As per the official figures, 1,413 cases of rape were registered in various police stations between 1 September 2017 and 11 September 2018 as compared to 1,193 cases between September 2016 and August 2017. The number of rape cases during the same period in 2014-15 and 2015-16 were 961 and 1,026 respectively.
Likewise, incidents of molestation went up with 2,320 cases getting registered between September 2017 and 11 September 2018. Between September 2016 and August 2017, 1,991 cases of molestation were registered.
In an alarming trend, the cases of kidnapping of women or girls appear to have more than doubled between 2014-15 and 2017- 18. While 1,164 cases of kidnapping of women or girls were registered between September 2014 and August 2015, the number of such cases went up to 3,494 between September 2017 and 11 September 2018.
The cases of dowry deaths and dowry harassment, however, showed a downward trend. While dowry deaths came down from 260 in 2014-15 to 202 in 2017-18, dowry harassment cases came down from 3,408 in 2014-15 to 2,896 in 2017-18.
Two Haryana districts of Gurugram and Faridabad, which share there border with the national capital of Delhi, witnessed highest number of crimes against women. In 2017, 172 cases of rape were registered in Gurugram, while the number of molestation cases was 380. The number of kidnapping cases of women and girls during the same period was 402. Since January 2018, 95 cases of rape and 162 cases of molestation have been registered in Gurugram, 162 cases of molestation and 268 cases of kidnapping were also registered during the same period.
In 2017, 127 cases of rape were registered in Faridabad, while the number of molestation cases was 208. The number of kidnapping cases of women and girls during the same period was 389.
Since January 2018, 90 cases of rape and 108 cases of molestation have been registered in Faridabad, 162 cases of molestation and 234 cases of kidnapping were also registered during the same period.
According to the National Crime Record Bureau (NCRB) 2016 report, Haryana had a rape rate of 9.4 (gang rape per one lakh population) against the national average of 6.1.
