Haryana Assembly on Thursday passed a Bill advocating capital punishment for rape of children below 12-years of age.

With this, Haryana has become third state in the country after Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh to approve death sentence for those convicted of such crimes.

Last month, the Haryana government had given its nod to a proposal to bring in a legislation that would have a provision awarding death penalty to those guilty of raping girls aged 12 years or less.

On 9 March, the Rajasthan Legislative Assembly had also passed a Bill approving death penalty to those convicted of raping or gang-raping a girl upto 12 years of age.

In a meeting of the Harayna Cabinet held in February headed by Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar, it was also decided to make the existing criminal laws related to sexual offences more stringent.

It was earlier reported that in case of rape or gang rape of a girl up to 12 years of age, there will be a punishment of death or rigorous imprisonment of not less than 14 years which may extend to imprisonment for life that is for remainder period of person’s natural life, the Cabinet had decided.
