Haryana got less Bhakra water: Hooda

Bhupinder Singh Hooda.

Former Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda on Friday said Haryana is facing a severe water crisis due to the negligence and apathy of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government in the state.

In a Press statement, the Congress leader said while most of the waterfalls and ponds have dried up or are on the brink of drying, water supply from the canals has already been halfway or less. He said between March 2018 and May 2018, Haryana did not get its full and fixed share of water of its share from Bhakra Dam despite the fixed share of the water.

Hooda said that on September 20, 2017, the water in Bhakra Dam was 1673 feet below its highest level of 1680 feet, which was better than the average. But today the level of water in Bhakra has fallen by 31 feet to 1642 feet, which is alarming as after the construction of the dam, the water level has rarely come below 1650 feet.

The former CM said in the meeting of the Bhakra and Beas Management Board (BBMB) on 29 May, 2018, an excuse was made that the water level in the reservoir is lesser due to deficient snow fall in the winter.

Hooda said when there was less snowfall and it was natural to have less water in the dam during summer, the BBMB should have released lesser water between March and May. “Why was so much water released between March and May that it reached its lowest 1642 feet? The state government should tell that when Haryana is spending the full expenditure of its share in BBMB, why didn’t it get the water of its share?,” he asked.

Hooda said that there are many big dams in the country and everywhere the chairman of the management board is out of the partner states so that there is no complaint of discrimination.

“Unfortunately, this tradition was broken in BBMB and a person belonging to the shareholder state was made the chairman.

The result was that the new chairman listened to his masters in other state. Therefore, while some state got water more than its share, Haryana got less water than its share,” he alleged.
