Haridwar killer elephant released in wild

The forest department finally released a killer elephant, after radio collaring in Haridwar, to end a 36 hour special operation on Sunday. The final phase of the operation began at 5 am to conclude by 9.30 am at Mithawalla, in which experts from Wildlife Institute of India and World Wildlife Fund radio collaring the tusker. This was among the few instances in Uttarakhand in which a jumbo was moved after tranquilizing and released in forest by tracing gadget.

The elephant had created terror in Jawalpur locality in Haridwar by killing two and injuring two other persons in the past two weeks. Rajaji Tiger Reserve’s director Sanatan Sonker said, “The radio collar has been fixed to keep a track of the elephant. We will be getting the GPS and also accurate location of the jumbo through the radio collar. We received technical support from Wildlife Institute of India and World Wildlife Fund in the special operation.” The radio collar is fully operation and the forest department has started tracking the elephant- which had created panic in Jawalpur since the past one and half months.

The process started on Friday evening but the forest team tasted success after 12 long hours when they managed to tranquilize the elephant. After that the second phase of the operation began in which a belt was wrapped around the body of the jumbo. With the support of two forest department elephants the tranquilized jumbo was taken 2 kms away at Mithawalla. After keeping in observation, the elephant was released in the jungle.
