Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) chief Bimal Gurung resigned from the post of chief executive of the Gorkhaland Territorial Administration (GTA) and demanded a Central Bureau of Investigation ( CBI) probe into the police firing on the GJM supporters, on Friday.

His resignation comes after the outfit’s general secretary Roshan Giri, along with other 43 members, resigned from executive committee of the GTA, a semi-autonomous administrative body for the Darjeeling and Kalimpong hills in West Bengal. It was formed to replace the Darjeeling Gorkha Hill Council, which was formed in 1988 and administered the Darjeeling hills for 23 years.

Before tendering his resignation, Gurung had said that the strike will continue. "Indefinite strike in the hill town of Darjeeling will continue and an all-party meeting has been postponed to 29 June. We will burn the GTA agreement on 27 June," Gurung said on Friday.

Earlier, the GJM had offered a 12-hour "window" to the schools in the Darjeeling hills to evacuate students safely to Siliguri and Rongpo.

An indefinite bandh was called in the hills by GJM on June 15.

With supplies running out and the vacations to start shortly, the boarding schools of Darjeeling are facing a harrowing time due to the shutdown.
