A man, who used to cross-dress, allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself at his residence in northwest Delhi’s Mangolpuri, citing social stigma in his suicide note, the police said on Thursday.

The deceased was identified as a 24-year-old man, Ankit, a senior officer said.

“We received information regarding the incident at Raj Park police station in the early hours of Wednesday,” the officer mentioned.

With this information, a team reached the spot, after which they found that Ankit was hanging from a ceiling fan with a dupatta.

“Ankit identified himself as a woman and used to cross-dress,” the officer said. During the preliminary investigation into this case, it suggests that he took this step under societal pressure, and the lack of acceptance may have contributed to his mental distress.

Subsequently, his body was taken to Sanjay Gandhi Memorial Hospital (SGMH) to conduct a post-mortem examination, they said.

The body has been handed over to the family of the deceased, and inquest proceedings under section 194 (suicide) of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita have been initiated for further probe, they said.
