A minor girl studying in the fifth standard was allegedly beaten up and hanged up on the ceiling by her father when she disobeyed her stepmother’s orders to skip school on Wednesday. Police, along with some District Child Welfare Committee members, on Thursday rescued the girl, along with her two sisters, from their house in Panchkolguri Village in Alipurduar.

“The girl’s father married another woman just six months after the death of his wife. Her stepmother regularly stops her from going to school and instead makes her do all the household chores. on Wednesday morning, when the child disobeyed her stepmother’s order to not go to school, she was beaten black and blue and hanged up from the ceiling by her father.

The stepmother also helped him in the act,” sources said. An uncle of the child, Ram Munda, saved the girl from her father’s clutches. The determined girl, however, went to school on Thursday and explained everything to the headteacher of the school. The headteacher then informed Block development Officer Narbu Sherpa about the matter.

Mr Sherpa immediately informed the District Magistrate of the matter and an enquiry has been initiated. Later, a local NGO, Manabik Mukh, interfered in the matter and initiated the girl’s rescue. “We want immediate arrest of the parents.

The girl should be protected at any cost,” said the secretary of the NGO, Ratul Biswas. The father of the child, Dilip Munda, who is a daily wage earner, has, however denied the allegations. “The allegations are completely false and baseless. We neither beat her nor hanged her up. I want my child to go to school daily,” he said. “The girl, along with her two sisters, was rescued. The three children are now in our custody. We are investigating the matter,” said the chairman of the Alipurduar District Child Welfare Comittee, Kanti Bhusan Mahanta.
