Panic gripped residents of a high-rise housing society in Ghaziabad’s Indirapuram area on Wednesday after a major fire broke out in the upper floors of Gaur Green Avenue in Abhay Khand. Firefighters rushed to the spot and worked to evacuate those trapped as flames spread across multiple apartments, gutting at least eight flats.
The incident comes amid growing concerns over fire safety preparedness in high-density residential complexes, even as officials maintained that the building’s firefighting systems and swift response helped avert casualties.
According to officials, the blaze affected flats between the ninth and eleventh floors. Chief Fire Officer Rahul Kumar said there were no deaths or injuries, adding that several residents who had been trapped were rescued safely.
“There are no casualties. Some people were trapped. The fire service has safely evacuated them. There were five to six flats, from the ninth to the eleventh floor; some were closed, some were open. The fire is being extinguished. By now, we have completely contained the fire. More than seventeen of our vehicles are present at the scene. Hydraulics are also present. We have completely controlled the fire. Some flats were empty, and some were partially damaged,” Kumar said.
Ghaziabad District Magistrate Ravindra Kumar Mandar said the administration received information about the fire around 8:30 am and confirmed that at least eight flats were gutted in the incident.
“At around 8:30 am, we received the information about the fire and at least eight flats have been gutted. The rescue officials have informed me that there have been no casualties. I have also talked to the local RWA in charge here. Immediately after receiving the information, 17 fire tenders were dispatched to the scene,” he said.
He added that a probe will be conducted to ascertain the cause of the fire. “A team will be formed to investigate the cause of the fire. I have been told that some work related to wood was going on in one of the flats, hence, we are getting that checked. We have also issued an advisory for the neighbouring private societies, and we will also conduct checks for it,” Mandar said.
Officials also said two elderly residents were shifted to nearby hospitals after experiencing breathing difficulties due to the smoke.

Fire breaks out on upper floors of Indirapuram society
Eyewitnesses described scenes of confusion in the initial moments, with residents scrambling to access emergency equipment. Ajay Sharma, a resident of the society, said the firefighting system proved crucial once it was activated.
“There was a fire on the upper floor. We had a firefighting system installed. The RWA had just installed a new firefighting system. It is working very well. The pipe is inside a box, so people were not able to understand how to open it or what to do. I said, there is no time to think so much. I quickly broke the glass and took out the pipe. No one was injured,” Sharma said.
Fire tenders were deployed immediately after the blaze was reported, with more than 17 vehicles and hydraulic equipment pressed into service to douse the flames. Authorities said the fire has been brought under control, though cooling operations are still underway.
Officials from the police and fire departments are examining the circumstances surrounding the incident, and a detailed investigation is underway. Some flats were locked when the fire broke out, while others were left charred or damaged. Officials said the full extent of the losses will only be clear once the firefighting and cooling operations are over.
The exact cause is still not known. Early indications suggest the fire may have started in one flat before quickly spreading to neighbouring homes.
