The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) is planning to impose the restriction on the weight of the baggage carried by commuters. Starting March 20, commuters won’t be able to carry more than 15 kg of luggage with them in the Metro.

According to The TOI, the DMRC has installed barriers that prevent oversized baggage from passing through X-ray machines at Barakhamba Road, Anand Vihar, Chandni Chowk, Kashmere Gate and Shahdara.

Around 15 more stations, including New Delhi Metro Station, will have similar barriers.

The baggage rule is not new. In its Passenger Information section on its official website, DMRC asks passengers to limit their “baggage to 15 Kgs, not exceeding 60 cm (Length) X 45 cm (Breadth) X 25 cm (Height) in size”.

But this is the first time since it commenced operations that the DMRC has taken a decision to impose the restriction.

Reports say that instead of barring passengers outright, authorities will educate them about the rule. The imposition will come gradually. Those barred from entering due to overweight baggage will have their Metro ticket money reimbursed.

DMRC reportedly claims that bigger baggage result in long queues at scanners and tremendous pressure on authorities, which is a possible security scare.
