Former HPPSC chairman Major General (retd) C M Sharma allegedly committed suicide late Thursday night by shooting himself. He was found dead at his residence in Jakhoo area of Shimla. He is survived his wife and two sons.

According to reports, Sharma had been suffering from depression. His wife, who reportedly slept in a different room, found the body on Friday morning after which the police were informed.

Shimla Superintendent of Police, Omapati Jamwal said, “Prima facie evidence reveals that death was due to gun shot with a small weapon.”

Deputy Superintendent of Police, Shimla city, Pramod Shukla said that initially the family had found him missing in the morning and had informed the police around 9.00 am, however later at around 11.00 am they reported that his body was found from the basement of the house and probably he had shot himself.

A suicide note was recovered from the house, which reveals that he was probably under some depression due to his ailing health that attributed to this extreme step, he added.

The Forensic Science Laboratory Shimla team was called to examine the spot and investigation is on to probe the matter, he added.

The body has been sent for post-mortem, he said.

Sharma was the 13th Chairman of Himachal Pradesh Public Service Commission (HPPSC) from 2009 to 2013.

Born in June 1951 at Shimla, Sharma completed his schooling from D A V School, Shimla followed by B.Sc. Agriculture from the then Himachal Agriculture College, Solan. He had joined Army and was commissioned in the Regiment of Artillery in 1972. Sharma commanded an Artillery Regiment in Ladakh and an Artillery Brigade in insurgency environment of Jammu and Kashmir.

Sharma had been instructors in the prestigious institutions like Army War College and School of Artillery and was an expert in Information Warfare and Disaster Management.
