Forest officials has been tracking an injured elephant to provide treatment as it was hit by a goods train on Saturday but the limping jumbo remains elusive since last two days.

A team of forest officials led by DFO Rinku Kumari are making all-out efforts but the elephant is with a herd and they dare not approach it. The elephant was hit by a goods train at Kaunriapal and was limping when it entered the Pathargadi forests crossing the NH 55 on 21 April.

The team has only administered medicine with watermelons which is not effective, forest officials informed. Meanwhile, forest department used the public address system in Kaunriapal and nearby villages providing information on movement of the herd.

A herd of 50 to 60 elephants was crossing the villages in morning from Brahmani and going to forest by crossing Rengali canal. Due to increasing man-elephant conflict, six people were killed by marauding elephants in 10 days in the district.

The DFO said, “We are alert day and night for the treatment of the injured elephant. Awareness and patrolling are going on in different villages.”
