An FIR was registered against Samajwadi Party leader and Rampur MLA Azam Khan five years after he was accused of defaming the RSS (Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh) and insulting Shia religious leader Maulana Qlbe Jawad.

According to reports, the FIR was registered at Lucknow’s Hazratganj police station by complainant Ullema Zamir Naqvi, a social worker.

Khan is accused of misusing the government letterhead and official stamp for “maligning” the RSS and the religious leader in August 2014. At the time, Khan was a minister in the SP government led by Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav.

The complainant also said that Jawad’s secretary, Imran Naqvi, was insulted, too. Naqvi alleged that Wasim Razvi, who is the Chairman of Shia Central Waqf Board, was involved in the matter.

Quoting Hazratganj SHO Radha Raman Singh, the TOI reported that Naqvi has been presenting his case since 2014.

“We finally lodged the FIR after scrutinising all documents,” Singh reportedly said.

The FIR has been registered under sections 500 (Punishment for defamation) and 505 (Statements conducing to public mischief) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

In a different incident, Azam Khan was also accused by actor-turned-politician Jaya Prada of trying to attack her with acid.

“Because the state I was in, contesting elections with Azam Khan, as a woman, with acid attack threats, threat to my life… I couldn’t even tell my mother if I would come back alive whenever I left from home,” Jaya Prada claimed,” she said in conversation with author Ram Kamal at the Queensline Literature Festival in Mumbai on Friday.
