Five farmers were reportedly killed and many injured when security forces opened fire at the protesting peasants in Madhya Pradesh’s Mandsaur district on Tuesday. Farmers are protesting for about a week, demanding fair price to their produce and loan-waiver.

Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Chouhan announced a compensation of Rs. 5 lakh to the families of farmers killed in the firing.

Earlier, state Home Minister Bhupendra Singh, however, denied that the police resorted to firing. As per reports, a Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) team called to assist the police “fired shots” at the protesters when they resorted to violence and set five buses on fire.

The farmers are demanding remunerative prices for their produce, including milk, and loan-waiver.

On Monday, Chouhan had blamed “a few people for giving a wrong direction to the farmers’ protest” at a press conference on Monday. “If this does not stop, such people will face consequences,” Chouhan had said. He said a Rs. 1,000-crore price-stabilisation fund would be created and that onions will be bought at Rs. 8 per kg.

Farmers had clashed with police in Neemuch on Monday. At least two police personnel and many farmers were injured in the clashes.
