Four criminals were beaten to death with sticks and stones by a vigilante mob in a Bihar village, police said on Tuesday.

The incident took place in Rohtas district of Bihar, when the eight criminals were trying to flee after firing indiscriminately at a man in Koath area, said police officer Alok Kumar and added that the criminals had sought to extort money from Arun Choudhary, husband of a Rohtas District Council member Rinki Kumari.

The police said the eight men had allegedly demanded Rs 3 lakh from Rinky Devi nearly one-and-half-months ago and threatened her of dire consequences if she did not pay.

The criminals fired at Arun after he refused to pay the extortion money. The bullet missed him and injured another, Kumar said.

Locals rushed to the spot after hearing the sound of gunshots and caught four of the attackers and beat them up while the four others managed to escape.

Police took the four criminals to a nearby hospital where doctors declared them dead.

Police have registered murder case against unidentified persons in connection with the lynching, DIG Rahman said.

The identity of the four men was yet to be established, said Rahman and added that raids are being conducted to nab the other four who fled the spot.
