Ex- CPM leader held on smuggling charges, days before joining BJP

The police on Saturday arrested a former firebrand CPI-M leader from his in-law’s house in Ketugram in Katwa just ahead of his joining the BJP on Friday night on charges of possessing narcotic substances worth Rs 25 lakhs.

The arrest, however, has sparked a stir as Abul Basar Ansari alias Dablu Ansari had never been associated with trading of such prohibited substances.

The state committee member of BJP, Mr Naresh Konar said, “Dablu was arrested on false and fabricated charges and purposely under the dictate of the ruling party leaders.”

He added: “Dablu was likely to join our party with his nearly 5,000 members and the police, acting on a tip-off by the intelligence officials booked him bringing such a heinous charge.”

State BJP leader Mukul Roy too in recent times has alleged that the police, under the dictate of the

Trinamul Congress has booked several persons across the state especially those are inclined to the BJP.

Recently Dablu was arrested on charges of possessing illegal firearms after he had a meeting with a state committee leader of the BJP.

Dablu had left Mongalkote and started staying at his in-law’s house in Ketugram after being granted bail in firearms case.

on Friday, the police said, “We raided his place in the evening hours and seized 25.5 kg’s of hashish from his possession.”

The high-priced hashish also was produced at the court today.

The police claimed, “He was involved in trafficking of narcotics to different locations in Birbhum and Murshidabad from Ketugram.”

The Chief Judicial magistrate’s Court meanwhile rejected his bail petition forwarded by his lawyer Gurudas Banerjee today and has ordered Judicial custody for him till 3 February.
