Delhi and parts of the National Capital Region (NCR) were battered by relentless rain on Tuesday morning, leaving several key roads submerged and severely disrupting traffic movement.
The downpour led to waterlogging in multiple areas of the city, including Connaught Place, ITO, Pragati Maidan, Panchkuian Road, Bahadur Shah Zafar Marg, and Ram Bagh Road.
Delhi’s base station at Safdarjung recorded 68.3 mm of rainfall, falling under the ‘heavy rainfall’ category, while the Ridge and Lodhi Road stations reported ‘very heavy’ rainfall of 129.4 mm and 71.8 mm, respectively, according to India Meteorological Department (IMD) data recorded until 5:30 pm.
Intense rainfall was also witnessed at Pragati Maidan, Pusa, and Ayanagar stations, which recorded 45.1 mm, 37.5 mm, and 23 mm of rain, respectively, leaving several motorists stranded across the city due to waterlogged roads following the heavy spell.
The Delhi Traffic Police issued route diversion advisories, urging commuters to avoid waterlogged stretches—particularly around the Azad Market and Zakhira Railway Station underpasses—and to use alternate routes for a smoother journey.
“In view of waterlogging at Azad Market Railway Underpass, Ram Bagh Road, traffic is affected in the surrounding areas. Diversions are in place for vehicles coming from Rani Jhansi Road, Barfkhana, Pul Mithai, and Veer Banda Bairagi Marg,” the Delhi Traffic Police cautioned travelers in a post on X.
Traffic was also affected on the ring road from Sarai Kale Khan towards INA Market due to waterlogging near Seva Nagar bus depot and Barapulla areas.
The morning rains brought down the city’s maximum temperature by nearly six degrees, which settled at 29.1 °C. However, the minimum temperature at 26.8 °C did not show much change at 26.8 °C, according to IMD data.
The Met department has not shared any color-coded forecast for Wednesday.
