Disilting work on seven-kilometer-long trunk sewer line has begun to provide relief to residents of several areas in West Delhi, including Janakpuri, Hari Nagar, Shiv Nagar, and Virender, from overflowing sewers, accumulation of water, and sanitation issues.
The main sewer line from West Delhi’s Jail Road, going up to Keshopur Sewage Treatment Plant, had not been cleaned for many years and had nearly 65 per cent silt deposition, Delhi’s Urban Development Minister Ashish Sood said. He launched the project for the cleaning of the trunk sewer.
Several areas were facing sewer overflow and choking drainage.
According to Sood, de-silting and cleaning of such sewer lines should be carried out every five years as per the norms, but going by available records, only a small portion of this line was cleaned in 2013 and which the work received no attention.
He shared that the expenditure incurred on the project would be approximately Rs 13 crore.
Sood, who visited the surrounding areas, also inspected waste management across several blocks in the Janakpuri ward. He slammed the previous governments for allegedly not showing any seriousness towards the issues that are directly affecting the public. Due to this, the residents had to suffer from multiple sanitary problems related to sanitation for years.
The minister shared that the work would be carried out using advanced machinery to divert the sewage flow through a bypass line with precision. Once completed, thousands of residents will get much relief.
The Minister also informed that the work is underway to address the drainage issues affecting the areas under the Janakpuri ward. In the next six months, the entire work is likely to be completed, following which wherever local sewer lines are found to be broken, or damaged in the area, will be replaced with new ones immediately.
During the inspection, the minister discussed various issues with officials and representatives of the waste management agency and gave directions to address the problems at the earliest.
After instructing the officials concerned from the civic agencies to solve problems flagged by the public, he said after ten days he would revisit the area to review the progress of the works.
Sood informed that as per CM’s directions, efforts are underway on a large-scale across the national capital to resolve challenges related to cleanliness and waste management.
