Former chief minister and leader of opposition Prem Kumar Dhumal on Tuesday accused Congress government of shielding mafias in the state and said close associates of some party leaders were also involved in such illegal activities.

Addressing a protest rally against the government at Bilaspur in Himachal Pradesh, around 80 kms from here, Dhumal said the land of Gods is soon turning into land of mafias and anti-social elements. “At a time when people of the state are facing shortage of construction material, mining mafia under political patronage was smuggling sand and other material to neighbouring state of Punjab,” he said, while questioning if this is possible without political patronage.

The former chief minister said around 1800 trees were felled in the constituency of Forest Minister Thakur Singh Bharmouri. Same is the case in Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh’s constituency where over 480 trees were felled by mafia. “But instead of conducting independent inquiry, the Chief Minister had himself given clean chit without even waiting for investigation report,” he said.

Taking a dig at corruption cases against Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh and family, he said when the head of state is himself involved in corruption then one can imagine the state of affairs in the state. “In the last four years, Congress government failed in carryout all round development in the state and instead indulged in promoting land, mining and drug mafias,” he added.
